Help:Login

From McGill University Physics Department Technical Services Wiki

The Linux Workstations generally look something like the image below (scale = 0.5).

The login name you should use is the McGill Unified Login / Email. There is probably some catchy accronym for it. In order for you to exist at McGill you are expected to check your e-mail almost as frequently as a graduate student eagerly awaiting instructions from his supervisor. This is the address you should use, I expect there are deviations from this rule, but it will be something like firstname.lastname@mail.mcgill.ca, as mentioned before you will know your password, therefore you exist.

There will be some lucky individuals for whom the above does not work. Come see me (Mark Orchard-Webb).

Upon login you should see something like the following:

The window in the center of the screen is the message of the day. This is one of the primary methods of me letting you know things that may have recently developed. Please read this message, I will not feel sympathetic if you suffer because you did not pay attention to its contents. You can dismiss this window, after memorization by left-clicking on the okay button.

If you have got this far you are now ready to explore the desktop.

Something Other

There is a remote possibility that you are greeted by, gasp, a text screen like the following:

Do not fear, you are a physics major, you can probably fix it! Press and hold down the Alt key, then press the F7 function key, then release the Alt key. With a bit of luck the GUI will pop back up. Wait for about a minute, if it has not. At this point I would prefer you seek my assistance before proceeding, there may be a reason behind this madness. However, if you are willing to face the consequences try pressing Ctrl-Alt-Del, this will reboot the machine in a polite manner, which will not make things worse. DO NOT PRESS THE POWER BUTTON OR THE RESET BUTTON! If the machines hard drive gets hosed because you disregarded this instruction you will not get priority service getting it fixed.
