Your login is authenticated against the McGill Active Directory, so use whatever lengthy string gets you access elsewhere. Something like ernest.rutherford@mail.mcgill.ca
It could be the case that your email address is valid and this login still insists that your account does not exist, this is one of the short comings of using ADS to authenticate unix accounts. There is a limitation on the client used to authenticate which limits the number of users in the password file to order 70 kilonames. You might be towards the end of the list, especially if you are a recent arrival.

There is now a pretty workable solution to this problem as of January 11, 2007. If your ADS login is not working please follow this link. You will need to know your DAS name to complete the transaction, but this allows me to use an alternate authentication method to verify your credentials. All my guinea pigs have been successful, but I am not imaginative enough to believe the are no account which will not still have difficulties, in which case ... drop me an email at mark.orchard-webb@mcgill.ca from an @mail.mcgill.ca address and I'll hack you in.Long term solution, I'm not sure ... I suspect it involves not using ADS --- yeah, it kinda doesn't :).
